1600KVA 690V Special Voltage Stabilizer for Huangling Scenic Area Cable Car Traction System

Introduction

In 2019, Winzele provided a 1600KVA, 690V special voltage industrial stabilization solution for the cable car traction system at Huangling Scenic Area, Wuyuan, Jiangxi, China. The stabilizer was installed on the incoming side of the cable car power supply system to support the stable operation of the traction drive system.

The cable car system uses a high-power DC traction motor (approximately 800kW), and its power supply system has high requirements for capacity, current and reliability. At the same time, mountain area power supply lines are long, grid capacity is limited, and on-site voltage tends to fluctuate.

This project operates at a 690V special voltage level: the system line voltage is 690V and the phase voltage is approximately 400V. Unlike conventional industrial low-voltage distribution, a standard 400V industrial voltage stabilizer cannot be applied directly. The stabilizer adopts three-phase independent regulation, and the 690V system requires special winding design and insulation matching; the voltage regulation winding structure also needs special design compared with ordinary 400V systems. Based on the on-site power supply conditions and drive system requirements, Winzele provided a stabilization solution through customized design to support the stable operation of the cable car traction drive system.

Winzele designed and manufactured this 1600KVA special voltage stabilizer according to the customer’s 690V power system requirements. This project reflects Winzele’s customized design and manufacturing capability for special voltage systems and high-reliability loads.

Why 690V Special Voltage Systems Require Customized Stabilization

A 690V special voltage system differs from conventional 400V industrial distribution: the system line voltage is 690V and the phase voltage is approximately 400V. The stabilizer design and selection must match the actual system voltage:

  • System voltage level matching: The stabilizer rated parameters and settings are configured for the 690V system;
  • Insulation level matching: The windings and overall insulation are designed for the 690V voltage level;
  • Protection configuration matching: Overvoltage, undervoltage and overcurrent protection functions are set according to 690V system parameters.

An ordinary 400V stabilizer cannot be used directly in a 690V system: its windings, insulation, input regulation range and protection parameters are all designed for the 400V level, and its voltage regulation winding structure cannot directly match the voltage regulation requirements of a 690V system.

Power Challenge

This project serves the cable car traction system at Huangling Scenic Area, Wuyuan, Jiangxi, China. Cable car and ropeway systems are transportation infrastructure, and their power supply must be stable and reliable. Mountain cable car systems are usually located in remote areas, with power supply conditions clearly different from urban industrial distribution:

  • Long power supply distances;
  • Higher distribution line impedance;
  • Limited grid capacity and higher voltage fluctuation risk.

As a result, mountain cable car power supply may experience line voltage drop, low operating voltage and voltage fluctuation. Load-side voltage variation can be superimposed on an already low line voltage, making it harder to maintain voltage at the traction supply end. These voltage issues need to be addressed through stabilization measures on the supply side.

Traction Drive Load Characteristics

The cable car system uses an approximately 800kW DC traction motor, and the power supply process is:

AC Power → Rectification and Speed Control System → DC Motor

This type of load has the following characteristics:

  • Large power capacity: The traction motor rated power is approximately 800kW, and the stabilization system needs sufficient capacity support;
  • High operating current: High-power DC traction corresponds to relatively high operating current;
  • Significant load variation during operation: Traction load varies clearly under different operating states such as starting, stopping, acceleration and deceleration;
  • High sensitivity to input voltage stability: DC traction systems are sensitive to the stability of the supply voltage.

In addition, the rectification system is a nonlinear load whose operating characteristics increase the difficulty of voltage regulation. The stabilization solution needs to match this load profile with large-capacity, special voltage systems.

690V Customized Voltage Stabilizer Solution

Winzele is a customized voltage stabilizer manufacturer. Unlike standard voltage stabilizers designed for conventional industrial voltages, Winzele manufactures customized stabilizer systems according to actual power system requirements. Winzele does more than supply equipment — it customizes design and manufacturing according to the customer’s special voltage system, with transformer structure, voltage regulation range, insulation design and protection configuration specifically matched to the actual power supply system.

Around the 690V special voltage system of this project, the solution covers customized voltage regulation design, transformer structure matching, protection configuration and on-site commissioning:

  • Customized voltage regulation design: The stabilizer voltage regulation structure is designed for the 690V system voltage, using three-phase independent regulation;
  • Special winding and insulation: The transformer windings, voltage regulation winding structure and insulation are designed for the 690V voltage level;
  • Protection configuration: Overvoltage, undervoltage and overcurrent protection are set according to 690V system parameters;
  • On-site commissioning: The stabilizer input and output settings are finalized after verification against the actual incoming power supply, drive manufacturer requirements and local power supply conditions.

The equipment output is stabilized at 690V ±3%. This is not a standard configuration of an ordinary industrial stabilizer, but customized design and manufacturing for a non-standard voltage system: the windings, insulation, voltage regulation structure and protection are all specifically matched to the 690V special voltage system.

  • Coverage: The stabilized voltage covers the traction drive system, auxiliary loads and the cable car power supply system (ropeway power supply);
  • Input/output connection: Connected to the dedicated special voltage distribution system;
  • Bypass maintenance: Configured with a bypass device to maintain the power path during servicing;
  • Engineering consideration: The stabilizer windings and insulation are designed for 690V, and the regulation range covers on-site voltage fluctuation on the special voltage network.

Safety and Operational Reliability

The cable car traction system is high-reliability operating equipment, and its power supply stability directly affects:

  • Traction drive operation: The drive system needs a stable power supply for normal operation;
  • Control system reliability: Rectification, drive and control systems need to avoid frequent interruption;
  • Continuous system availability: Stable power supply is the foundation for continuous system operation.

Voltage anomalies may cause drive system protection trips, operation interruption and increased equipment maintenance requirements. Stabilization measures on the incoming side directly affect the continuous, reliable operation of the cable car traction system.

A cable car traction system is continuous-operation transportation equipment, and its power supply system takes stable operation as a basic requirement. The incoming-side stabilization solution is built around engineering reliability to support stable operation of the traction drive system.

FAQ

Q: What type of project is this 690V stabilizer used for? A: This project was applied in 2019 to the cable car traction system at Huangling Scenic Area, Wuyuan, Jiangxi, China, providing 690V special voltage stable power supply for a high-power DC traction system.

Q: Can a standard 400V stabilizer be used in a 690V system? A: No. A stabilizer designed for 400V-level distribution has transformer windings, insulation and regulation functions designed for that voltage level. A 690V system requires a special voltage stabilizer matched to the actual system voltage, input range and output requirements.

Q: Why does a 690V system need three-phase independent regulation? A: In a 690V system with line voltage 690V and phase voltage approximately 400V, each phase may have different load and voltage conditions. Three-phase independent regulation adjusts each phase separately, maintaining output voltage stability of each phase more accurately to meet the operating requirements of the traction load.

Q: Can Winzele provide customized stabilizers for non-standard voltage systems such as 690V? A: Yes. For non-standard voltage levels, Winzele performs customized design and manufacturing according to on-site power supply conditions and drive system requirements, including 690V special winding design, voltage regulation structure matching, insulation level matching and protection configuration — different from conventional 400V industrial stabilizers.

Q: Why is the stabilizer installed on the incoming side of the cable car power supply system? A: Installed ahead of the traction drive distribution, the stabilized voltage covers the entire cable car power supply system from a single node — traction motor, drive system and auxiliary loads — instead of protecting each branch separately.

Q: What factors cause voltage fluctuation in mountain cable car power supply? A: Mountain cable cars are usually located in remote areas with long power supply distances, high line impedance and limited grid capacity, which can easily cause line voltage drop and low voltage. In addition, the rectification system is a nonlinear load whose operating characteristics increase the difficulty of voltage regulation.
