1200KVA Voltage Stabilizer and Isolation Transformer Power Quality Solution for AI Computing Infrastructure

Introduction

AI computing facilities typically include server power modules, UPS systems and high-density electronic loads. The UPS input side is usually a rectifier-type nonlinear load environment, sensitive to input voltage stability, power quality and disturbance propagation.

This project was implemented in 2024, using a 1200KVA industrial voltage stabilizer combined with an isolation transformer to provide a stable power environment for AI computing infrastructure. As an industrial power equipment manufacturer, Winzele was responsible for the manufacturing, assembly and system integration of the equipment.

The solution applies to AI computing centers, data center infrastructure and other highly sensitive electronic load scenarios.

AI Computing Infrastructure Power Challenges

AI servers, GPU computing equipment and data center IT equipment are high-value electronic loads with high requirements for input voltage stability and power quality. The main challenges faced by AI computing facility power supply systems include:

  • Grid voltage fluctuation: Power supply voltage fluctuation may affect the operation stability of computing equipment;
  • Complex industrial environment disturbance: Some disturbances in the distribution environment may propagate to sensitive equipment;
  • UPS front-end input quality requirements: The UPS input power environment needs to remain stable;
  • Power quality issues from nonlinear loads: Nonlinear loads such as switch-mode power supplies may increase voltage distortion.

Why AI Computing Facilities Require Voltage Stabilization and Power Quality Improvement

In the power supply chain of an AI computing facility, each stage of equipment serves a different function:

UPS and Rectifier-Type Loads in Data Center Power Systems

Data center UPS systems usually adopt a rectifier-type input structure, which from an engineering perspective is a nonlinear load. The UPS input side mainly concerns three aspects: voltage stability, harmonic environment and disturbance propagation. Front-end power design needs to consider voltage stabilization and power quality improvement.

This project forms a multi-stage power quality improvement through Voltage Stabilizer + Isolation Transformer + UPS: the stabilizer stabilizes the input voltage, the isolation transformer acts as a power quality improvement component improving electrical isolation and reducing certain disturbance propagation, and the UPS provides backup power.

It should be noted that the isolation transformer, as a power quality improvement component, improves the power supply environment through electrical isolation, reducing disturbance propagation and, under certain connection configurations, reducing some zero-sequence and third harmonic influence. However, the isolation transformer is not a harmonic filter or harmonic elimination equipment; complete harmonic management requires dedicated measures configured according to on-site test results. In this project, harmonic management is handled by the user side with 2×200A Honeywell AHF.

Industrial Voltage Stabilization Solution

This solution configures a 1200KVA industrial voltage stabilization system with an isolation transformer, with the system logic as follows:

  • Voltage Stabilizer (Industrial Voltage Stabilizer): Responsible for input voltage fluctuation compensation and output voltage stabilization, providing a stable power foundation for downstream equipment; it is the core equipment of this solution;
  • Isolation Transformer: As a critical power quality component in the power quality solution, it provides electrical isolation, reduces certain common-mode disturbance propagation, improves the UPS input power environment and enhances power quality for sensitive electronic equipment;
  • UPS / Power Distribution (provided by the user at the back end): Provides backup power and power distribution, forming a multi-stage power quality assurance together with front-end stabilization and isolation.

Role of Dy Connection Isolation Transformer in AI Power Systems

The main functions of the Dy connection (delta/wye) isolation transformer:

  1. Provide electrical isolation between primary and secondary sides;
  2. Reduce certain electrical disturbance propagation;
  3. Improve the UPS input environment;
  4. Suitable for highly sensitive electronic loads.

The Dy structure provides improvement for certain zero-sequence and third harmonic related issues.
